Laos Unveils Decade-Long Border Trade Development Strategy

(MENAFN) Laos has taken a significant step toward reshaping its economic future, convening a high-level review session Wednesday to assess and approve a draft Border Trade Development Strategy spanning 2026 to 2035.

The meeting, organized under the auspices of the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce, centered on presenting preliminary research findings and charting a strategic course for the landlocked nation's border trade ambitions over the coming decade. The approved draft marks a pivotal milestone in formalizing Laos' border trade policy framework.

The strategy is designed to boost bilateral trade volumes, deepen regional integration, and cement Laos' emergence as a central transport and connectivity hub within Southeast Asia. As of 2025, the country operates 98 border checkpoints nationwide — infrastructure the government intends to leverage more aggressively to drive production growth, expand trade flows, and attract fresh foreign investment.

Given its landlocked geography, Laos has long treated border trade development as a cornerstone of its broader economic strategy, and the new decade-long roadmap signals a determined push to convert that geographic challenge into a regional connectivity advantage.
